A Danish recycling programme

Highlights from the first complete gypsum waste recycling program in Europe:
  • Launched in Denmark in the fall of 2001 with collection activities
  • Trucks equipped with crane and grapple service almost 500 collection points spread across the country
  • The special dedicated gypsum waste containers from Gypsum Recycling International is used by 75 pct. of all customers
  • Of all public waste recycling stations and municipal recycling centres 90 pct. now have containers and are covered by the collection system
  • The largest construction and demolition companies are among our important customers
  • The savings for the waste owners are typically more than 25 pct.
  • Within 5 years after our establishment up to 80 pct. of all gypsum waste in Denmark is being recycled by Gypsum Recycling International. This recycling rate is the highest in the world for any voluntary gypsum recycling system
  • Land filling of gypsum waste is not banned in Denmark but our partners use our system simply because of the economic and environmental advantages we offer them
  • Both Danish plasterboard manufacturers, Knauf/Danogips and Gyproc/Saint Gobain, take delivery of the recycled gypsum powder for use in the production of new virgin boards. Processing facilities are therefore strategically located close to their production facilities in Hobro and Kalundborg.

Turning Torso in Malmö – an end user case

  • The remarkable building, Turning Torso, is located in Malmö, Sweden with its 54 stories rising 190 m in the air
  • Santiago Calatrava, one of the most fascinating architects of our time, created HSB Turning Torso with inspiration from a sculpture called Twisting Torso which shows the human body in a twisting motion
  • HSB Turning Torso is an amazing combination of sculpture and building. It is also one of the few landmarks in the world to become part of everyday life with its 147 apartments, ten floors of offices and conference facilities on the two top floors
  • HSB Turning Torso is not only a wonder of cutting-edge architecture; it is also a building that facilitates an environmentally adapted way of life for the inhabitants
  • During the construction of Turning Torso all contractors were obliged to sort their waste. The waste materials varied from one contractor to another and included metal, plasterboard, wood etc. As much waste as possible was sent to recycling
  • We are proud to count Turning Torso among our customers. During the building project several hundred tons of plasterboard waste was recycled through our system
