The Danish Environmental Minister’s, Mrs. Ida Auken, meeting with GRI

On April 16, 2012 the Danish Environmental Minister, Mrs. Ida Auken, received representatives of GRI in the Danish Environmental Ministry in Copenhagen. During the almost 1 hour long discussion, CEO of GRI, Henrik Lund-Nielsen, and CTO of GRI, Claus Woldbye, described some of the challenges GRI had been facing since GRI as the first company in Europe introduced the concept of gypsum recycling back in 2001. The Minister was particularly interested in getting inspiration as to how politicians nationally and in the EU via political initiatives could help secure that the resources contained in waste would be optimally utilized. Among many topics discussed based on concrete examples, GRI emphasized the importance of transparency and the proper local enforcement of existing regulations to ensure that all market participants were operating according to the same rules. Similarly, the GRI representatives pointed out the need for clarification with respect to what waste treatment methods are considered beneficial and the significanct role the waste hierarchy of the 2008 EU waste directive could play in assuring the proper utilization of the resources found in waste. Further on an EU level the GRI representatives pointed out that instead of entirely new initiatives/directives, faster and more significant results could be achieved by assuring that the directives already agreed in the EU were properly implemented in all member states.
