Denmark makes true recycling of gypsum waste mandatory bans composting of gypsum waste and export for recovery purposes
12-12-2012 15:19
The Waste Hierarchy found in the EU waste directive 2008 assures real recycling of gypsum waste in Denmark

The new Danish initiative is based on the waste hierarchy found in the EU waste directive 2008. According to the hierarchy waste must only undergo the treatment that assures the best environmental outcome and per definition recycling must be given priority over recovery or disposal operations as recycling provides the best overall environmental result. On this basis Denmark can make it mandatory to send the gypsum waste to the type of treatment offered by the gypsum recycling system, which successfully was launched years ago by Gypsum Recycling International. The mandatory recycling requirement also effectively closes the export of gypsum waste for various so-called recovery operations found in Denmark’s neighboring countries, and similarly it will no longer be allowed to compost gypsum waste or spread it on farmland for what ever claimed purpose.
